A little less than a month previous the 127th birth anniversary in this city of Miguel Matamoros, a leading figure of Cuban music, Santiago's people evoke his legacy today.

In many different ways, the mark of the creator of the trio Matamoros, being the greatest international resonance in the Cuba's pentagram, is present and still seems to accompany passers-by as they walk along the Callejon del Carmen Street, in the city's historic center.

This is so because on one of those corners, very close to the Las Enramadas Heritage Corridor, stands an almost full-body bronze sculpture of Miguel Matamoros with his guitar, to whom tribute is paid in his hometown and throughout Cuba.

The upcoming celebration of May 8, the birth anniversary of the guitarist and performer of songs as 'Dia del Son' (Son's Day), has further enhanced that sonorous heritage that will be celebrated across the country.

Precisely, an article in the Sierra Maestra weekly, signed by Rodulfo Vaillant, president of the provincial branch of the National Union of Writers and Artists, recalls the creation of the Son 14 orchestra, which became an emblem of the genre, under the leadership of Adalberto Alvarez.

The National Music Award and director of the Adalberto Alvarez y su Son group is leading the preparations in Cuba to pay tribute to a sonority considered Cultural and Intangible Heritage of the nation.
