With the attendance of exponents from Japan, Argentina, Canada and United States, the 20th Ernest Hemingway International Colloquium was held in Havana from June 25 to 28.
The event is a space to talk on life and work of US writer Ernest Hemingway. The aim of the 20th edition is based on the necessity to promote the interchange of information among specialists and institutions where they treasure Hemingway’s personal belongings (Hemingway Museum) as well as to compare works on the writer’s life and work that have been made recently.
They include celebrations for the 90th anniversary of the first publishing of Hemingway’s novel Green Hills of Africa” (1935), the 85th anniverary of the first publishing of his novel To whom the bells ring (1940), the 65th anniversary of the conclusion of A Moveable Feast (1960) as well as the encounter of Ernest Hemingway anf former Cuban President Fidel Castro Ruz on May 15, in 1960.
The program includes academic sessions featuring presentations of research results by scholars, academics, university professors, and national and international writers, as well as exchanges with participants. 19 papers were submitted, 8 of them were from abroad and 11 from Spain.
The aforementioned scientific event provided insight into the life and work of the American, who lived in Havana until his death, and included two lectures and an equal number of books launching.
Attendees were introduced to the digital version of The Ernest Hemingway Feast and Hemingway's Havana and Other Stories, hosted by Cuban intellectual Ciro Bianchi.
Likewise, and as is customary, there were visits to sites of special significance, beginning with Hemingway's presence: the coastal town of Cojímar and its Terrace, the Hemingway International Yacht Club, and Sloppy Joe's Bar on Friday, June 27.
The Finca Vigía Museum, Hemingway's Cuban home, will host the closing ceremony on June 28th.
The community of San Francisco de Paula once again hosted an exchange with the children of the Gigi's Stars children's baseball team, a project of the museum that involved neighboring families, especially their children.
In coordination with the Swedish Embassy in Cuba, the reproduction of the Nobel Prize scroll will be unveiled at the Museum.
The Ernest Hemingway Colloquium is a biennial event organized by the Museum that treasures his history in Cuba. They have brought together prestigious figures from the arts, research, and academia to discuss his life and work, legacy, and impact.
